Are you scared of getting clients?
Think about it for a moment…
Does the thought of getting someone to pay you money for coaching and then having to show up and work with them fill you with fear?
Have you ever noticed that the very thing we want we’re often afraid of doing – this is also true for your clients.
One of the biggest reasons we don’t have what we want is that we’re frightened of what we want.
Running a coaching business is no small undertaking. It is an opportunity to be present with another individual, supporting them to reach their full potential and achieve their goals.
However, for many coaches, the fear of getting clients and working with them can be a significant roadblock.
Here are the top three reasons why coaches often struggle with this fear, and let’s explore strategies to overcome them.
1. Fear of Inadequacy
One of the primary reasons coaches fear getting clients is the nagging doubt of whether they can help others. Imposter syndrome can creep in, leading to thoughts like, “What if I can’t provide the results they need?” This self-doubt can be paralyzing and stops coaches from actively seeking clients.
How to Overcome the Fear of Inadequacy:
- Continuous Learning: Remember that no coach is perfect, and every coach has room for growth. Keep an open mindset – Invest in continuous learning and develop your understanding of yourself, your clients, and your coaching business skills, to boost your confidence in your abilities.
- Client Success Stories: Keep a record of your past successes and positive feedback from clients. Revisit these whenever self-doubt surfaces to remind yourself of the difference you have made to others. It is easy to forget your awesomeness when fear kicks in.
- Network with Fellow Coaches: Connect with other good coaches in your field to share experiences and gain insights. Learning from others can help normalize feelings of inadequacy and encourage personal growth. You realize you’re not alone and others struggle too. This is why I open up the Coaching Mastery Accelerator: The 6-Month Business Booster twice a year for coaches to mastermind and work together (email info@coachbrilliant.com to join the waiting list and get more information)
2. Fear of Rejection
Another common fear many coaches face. When you put yourself out there to attract clients, there’s always a possibility that they might say no or not show interest. Fear of rejection can be a significant barrier to building a thriving coaching business.
How to Overcome the Fear of Rejection:
- Shift Your Perspective: Instead of seeing rejection as a personal failure, view it as an opportunity for growth. Being rejected can give you insights into how to refine your approach. It is valuable feedback.
- Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that every potential client won’t always be the right fit for your coaching services. Focus on finding clients who align with your values and goals, making rejection less daunting.
- Practice Resilience: Build resilience by maintaining a positive mindset and not letting rejection deter you from pursuing your passion. Remember that each “no” gets you one step closer to a “yes.” “No” is a great teacher.
3. Fear of Accountability
Coaches are great at holding clients accountable but struggle to do the same for their coaching business, leading to procrastination and hesitation in attracting clients.
They will get busy doing other things behind the scenes rather than taking action to get clients!
It is hard to keep yourself accountable. We blow things off and then feel behind or bad about ourselves.
How to Overcome the Fear of Accountability:
- Set Clear Goals: Define specific, and measurable goals for your coaching business. Having clear objectives can help you stay accountable to take responsibility for your success.
- Create a Support System: Share your goals with a mentor, coach, or trusted friend who can hold you accountable. Having someone to answer to can motivate you to take consistent action. (My group coaching clients have peer accountability – it’s good to know you’re not alone!)
- Break It Down: Break your business goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Tackling one task at a time can make the journey less overwhelming and more achievable. Remember, you can’t do it ALL AT ONCE… Small doable steps will move you forward.
While the fear of getting clients is a common challenge for many coaches, it doesn’t have to hold you back.
By addressing the underlying reasons for your fear and implementing the strategies mentioned above, you can confidently overcome these obstacles and build a thriving coaching practice that helps others achieve their goals and dreams.
Fear is not the truth – Fear just keeps you locked up in your patterned way of being. Fear loses its power when you stop running away from it and look it directly in the eye!
Embrace your fear as an opportunity to make a positive impact and watch your coaching business flourish.
