Some of my coaching clients are professional women in their 50s, who have achieved so much. They’ve built a successful career, navigated life’s many challenges, and emerged as a strong, accomplished individual.
Yet, despite all this, they find themselves at a crossroads. The career that once filled them with purpose now feels flat, and the energy they once had seems to be waning.
If you’re asking yourself, “If not this, then what?”—know that you’re not alone. This moment of uncertainty is a natural part of your journey, and it’s okay to not have all the answers right away.
In today’s fast-paced world, we often crave instant solutions, but embracing the unknown and being open to exploring what’s next can be a transformative experience. Here are five steps to help clients begin this journey and start exploring what could be next for them.
1. Allow Yourself to Be Present with Uncertainty
The first step is to acknowledge and accept that it’s okay not to know what’s next. Give yourself permission to sit with the uncertainty without rushing to find immediate answers.
Reflect on your current feelings, journal your thoughts, and recognize that this discomfort is part of the process. Embracing the unknown can open you up to new possibilities and perspectives.
2. Reconnect with What Makes You Happy
Think back to the activities and passions that used to bring you joy, even if they seem unrelated to your career. What hobbies did you love as a child? What interests have you put aside due to your busy professional life? Begin to reintroduce these activities into your routine. This reconnection can reignite your enthusiasm and provide clues about what might bring you fulfillment moving forward.
3. Engage in Self-Discovery
Consider exploring personal development tools such as the Enneagram, and the Kolbe A – Index. These tools can offer insights into your personality, strengths, and areas for growth. They can also help you understand your core motivations and identify what truly matters to you, guiding you toward a path that aligns with your authentic self.
4. Seek New Experiences
Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. This could be as simple as taking a class in a subject that intrigues you, volunteering for a cause you care about, or traveling to a place you’ve never been. New experiences can spark creativity, open your mind to different possibilities, and help you discover passions you never knew you had. It’s never too late and you’re NOT too old to be curious!
5. Connect with a Community
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who are also exploring what’s next in their lives. Join local or online groups, attend workshops or retreats, and engage in conversations with others on similar journeys. Sharing your experiences and hearing others’ stories can provide support, inspiration, and valuable insights.
My Final Thoughts
Transitioning from a successful career to exploring new possibilities can be both challenging and exhilarating.
By allowing yourself to be present with uncertainty, reconnecting with what makes you happy, engaging in self-discovery, seeking new experiences, and connecting with a supportive community, you can begin to uncover the next chapter of your life.
Remember, this is your journey, and there’s no right or wrong way to navigate it. Trust in the process, stay open to new opportunities and follow what brings you joy.
The path forward may not be clear right now, but with each step you take, you’re moving closer to discovering a fulfilling and vibrant future.
Embrace this moment of exploration with curiosity and compassion, knowing that the best is yet to come.
This really resonates with me, Elaine. Thank you for sharing your insights. I love what I do, but the business landscape around me is changing so I’m exploring some new stuff (I’m training in equine massage), and revisiting equestrian journalism, which I loved but haven’t done for several years. Neither would appear to ‘pay the bills’ like my current business of medical writing BUT I really believe that if you follow your gut instinct and your joy, opportunities appear….and you just never know what may happen!
Thanks for stopping by Kathryn – It fills my heart knowing that this resonated with you. I’m excited for the change in your business landscape and I love the ‘new stuff.’ You never know, you may find away for them to ‘pay the bills’… Follow your heart and your instincts, you are connecting to your true nature and it’s amazing what you can manifest when you’re living from a higher vibrational level because you’re in tune with your life. Much love to you, my friend.
