Our lives are so busy!

We often find ourselves caught in a never-ending cycle of doing. We juggle tasks, manage responsibilities, and constantly strive to meet the demands of our busy schedules.

Yet, amidst all this activity, we sometimes forget the profound importance of simply being.

It is important to remember that, as human beings, we are not defined solely by our actions or achievements. We are innately equipped with the capacity to connect deeply with ourselves and the world around us.

But how often do we allow ourselves the time and space to truly experience this connection?

The Power of Downtime

Recently, I hosted an Enneagram & the Coach Retreat that provided a sanctuary for participants to step away from their hectic lives. For many, it was an eye-opening experience that revealed just how crucial it is to create ‘downtime’—moments of stillness and reflection that allow us to recharge and reconnect.

One participant shared, “I didn’t realize how much I needed this time away to just be and relax in nature.” This sentiment was echoed by many, highlighting the profound impact of stepping away from the constant noise and demands of daily life.

The Necessity of Retreat

Twice a year, I retreat to nature for a few days, immersing myself in the serenity and stillness that only the natural world can offer. This practice has become essential to my well-being, helping me to recalibrate and reconnect with my true self.

In my previous blog post, Being instead of Doing, I discussed the challenge of escaping the mental chatter that plagues our minds. Meditation and retreat offer a way to quiet this noise, allowing us to access a deeper part of our being and reconnect with our true nature.

The Magic of Nature

As children, we are naturally curious and deeply connected to the world around us. We see magic in the simplest of things—a butterfly, a blooming flower, the rustle of leaves.

However, as we grow older, we are often taught to suppress our feelings and prioritize productivity over curiosity. This shift causes us to lose touch with our natural surroundings and, ultimately, with ourselves.

Also, today’s children are in danger of losing their connection to nature because of their addiction to technology. There is a beautiful world outside, waiting to be explored, and one of the reasons why I volunteer at the WNC Nature Center, here in Asheville, NC to help educate families about our environment and wildlife.

In another blog post, What happens when your own true nature meets Nature!, I shared my experience of attending a silent retreat. The profound stillness of nature has a way of silencing our minds and opening our hearts. It’s in these moments of quiet reflection that we can truly hear nature’s wisdom and reconnect with our essence.

Creating Space for Being

During our May retreat, I intentionally avoided bombarding participants with activities and exercises. Instead, we created an environment that encouraged relaxation, reconnection, and reflection. Participants had the freedom to nap, sit by the river, walk in the woods, or simply be still.

This spacious agenda allowed them to reconnect with themselves and the natural world in profound ways.

One of the participants beautifully summed up the experience: “Slowing down and connecting to nature in our busy, fast-paced world is an excellent way to relax, heal, regenerate, and rediscover your true nature.”

How often do you give yourself this gift?

Embrace the Gift of Being

As we navigate modern life’s complexities and fast pace, it’s important to remember that we are human beings, not human doings. By giving ourselves the gift of downtime and creating space to simply be, we can reconnect with our true nature and experience profound transformation. Being out in nature provides the perfect backdrop and catalyst for this.

If you feel the pull to step away from the noise and reconnect with yourself, maybe you’d like to consider joining us for our next Enneagram & the Coach Retreat in October.
