A client recently came to a coaching session with the question – Can we explore what to do with the rest of my life?
This is such a GREAT question!
Many of us find ourselves asking this at some point during our lives.
While this question is HUGE, I see it as the perfect opportunity to go deeper inside, because this is truly where the answer resides, not outside ourselves (which is where many of us are looking).
Begin by creating a clear vision.
Before you roll your eyes – stay with me for a moment!
I know the word vision can feel big and lofty and it’s easy to jump into trying to create one just from an intellectual standpoint.
BUT…
Clarity is EVERYTHING! Without it, your life is just happening to you.
The truth is if you don’t know where you’re going you’ll end up somewhere else – probably where you don’t want to be.
The dictionary describes vision as:
The ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom.
The key word for me here is IMAGINATION… This is where creating your vision begins…
Wake up your imagination.
As children, we revelled in the magical world of our imagination. We were innocent and our hearts were fully open to curiosity and possibility. We could be whoever we wanted to be, and envision all kinds of experiences as our imagination took us to different worlds in our minds.
THEN… we grew up.
Our elders taught us that our imagination was not to be trusted – you have your head in the clouds. Instead, we’re taught to ‘get real’ and think because being smart is good. We learned to replace imagination with fear, as we lost connection with our own true nature.
What is interesting is that as we grow, we learn to use our imagination to create negative stories in our minds, rather than positive ones of possibility. Our natural curiosity diminishes and is replaced by fear.
To begin to answer the question, you have to regain your innocence. Take your imagination off the dusty shelf, and learn how to play pretend again. Use the power of imagination in order to manifest what you want to do with the rest of your life.
Your dream life is not yet in your physical reality but it has to begin in your mind.
Every vision begins life in your imagination.
Every concept or thing around you that is man-made was created by someone’s imagination. It began life invisible in that person’s mind and not in the physical reality. Someone had an idea and used their imagination to develop it, fueled by their energy and desire, they began to take consistent action and bring it into reality.
BUT how do I even know what to do with the rest of my life?
Many of us have a foggy idea of what we’d like our current life or future life to be like. To answer this HUGE question you have to get more specific.
Here’s an activity to help you (or your client) get started.
To create a clear vision for the rest of your life (or any vision you want to create) you have to begin by reviewing ALL aspects of your current life.
Take time to get quiet and sit with this. Jack Canfield calls this the Gap Map. You may also recognize it as The Wheel of Life. Write down the main categories for each area of your life. Here is a list to get you started. Add any others that are specifically relevant to you:
Areas of your life:
- Financial
- Relationships/Family
- Career/Business/Work
- Health/Fitness
- Personal
- Time freedom and abundance
- Energy
- Community Service
- Spiritual
Ask yourself the following two questions for each of these areas of your life.
DON’T RUSH IT. DO IT FOR REAL – Be with it and explore it deeply. Write down what’s working and not working, including how you feel:
1. Where do I want to be?
Ask yourself – What do I really desire to have in each of these areas listed above? Notice the energy of your desire here. If it is strong you will feel it on every level – in your head, heart, and gut! Be with those feelings and sensations as you write.
2. Where am I now?
Describe where you are currently in each of the above areas of your life. Be honest and open. Again notice your energy of desire here. Is it strong? Is it present? Was it there in the past, but now it has gone? Be with those feelings and sensations as you write.
A NOTE about Desire
Your vision comes from urges that you have within you. This is what is known as desire. It is an emotion seeking expression. You feel it strongly within you, a surge of emotions and feelings inside.
The truth is – if it’s not there – you can literally NOT feel your desire inside of you!
When you truly want your vision you are making a physiological connection to it and feeling it. I’m sure you’ve already felt this in your life. You have felt the strong emotion of desire.
For every vision you create, you have to make it in your mind first and then use the alchemy of intention, energy, and desire, and then take consistent action to manifest it into the physical world.
It’s an inside job!
You create your vision, you feel the strong desire and excitement within and you’re excited about making it happen. You are taking that strong feeling and creating a vision or picture of it in your mind. You are allowing that feeling to express itself as an image and this becomes your vision.
When you connect with your desires and write down the things that you’d like, whatever it is, all of these are appearances of the desires in your heart that you are feeling.
Desire is IMPORTANT in the process of turning your invisible vision into physical reality.
Looking at every aspect of your life and asking yourself what do I really desire to have in each area is a great way to begin to create a clear vision for yourself.
The gap between where you want to be and where you are now…
For me, this is where you get to be intentional and use your desire, energy, and consistent action to manifest your vision into reality. A brilliant coach can guide you through this process and support you in setting your intentions and making things happen.
Are you ready to sit down and create your vision for what is next in your life or business?
This is just the start of an incredible journey called ‘the rest of your life!’
Reach out if you need any help…
You may have desired something in the past and are still clinging onto it, even though deep down the desire has gone… Some of us still hold onto this thing we once had a vision for, as if it is our duty to make it real. It isn’t… If you longer have a desire for it – it’s okay to let it go and explore what truly lights you up inside. Letting go of something that nolonger lights you up, creates freedom and expansion.
…And, it’s okay to be scared if THAT thing you desire, you have no idea how to make it happen… I vividly remember this happening to me in 2008-9 when I was sitting at home in my house in Sixpenny Handley, Dorset, England. I first had the dream to move to Asheville, USA. My boyfriend and I both did a test on the internet to see if we would be eligible for VISAs. I was, he wasn’t.
I had NO IDEA how I’d make this happen, BUT I imagined it in my mind, I held it in my intentions – the rest was alchemy at work!
Life is short my friends… Dream big!
