In a world that often feels like it’s moving at breakneck speed, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we must have everything figured out. That our paths should be linear, our passions clearly defined, and our destinies firmly in hand.

But life, in all its beautiful complexity, rarely works that way. It’s filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours.

This brings us to a crucial realization: You are never too old, and it’s never too late.

The Limiting Belief of “Too Late”

Many of us cling to the belief that there’s a certain timeline to achieving our dreams or discovering new passions. This belief can become a limiting factor, a chain that binds us to the familiar and the comfortable. It’s the voice that whispers, “I’m too old,” “It’s too late,” or “I’ll never make money doing that.”

But what if we challenged this narrative?

Consider the story of Diane, one of my coaching clients and a coaching business owner with 12 years experience. Despite her achievements, Diane encountered a period of flatness, a loss of spark in her coaching business.

The well-meaning advice from a friend of “just follow your passion” left her feeling more lost, trapped in the belief that exploring new avenues was a door firmly shut due to her age and stage in life.

The Pitfalls of “Follow Your Passion”

Telling someone to “follow their passion” is well-intentioned but can feel like an insurmountable task, especially if that passion isn’t clearly defined. This advice can feel intimidating, adding pressure and confusion.

For many of us, passions are not static; they evolve, ebb, flow, and sometimes, need rediscovery.

The Paralyzing Fear of Change

Fear is a formidable adversary. It whispers tales of potential failure, financial ruin, and diminished social standing, compelling us to cling to the familiar, even when it no longer serves us.

This fear is particularly potent when contemplating a significant career shift or embracing a long-neglected passion.

What if we reframed our perspective?

Instead of viewing our journey through the lens of “either/or,” we embraced an “AND Both” mindset?

Embracing “AND Both” Instead of “Either/Or”

The concept of “AND Both” rather than “either/or” offers a liberating perspective of expansion – allowing ourselves the grace to explore new interests alongside our current paths.

It’s the understanding that our lives don’t have to be an exclusive choice between one path or another. We can weave together various threads of interests, passions, and pursuits into a rich tapestry that truly represents who we are.

Take my own experience, for instance. While my professional life took me in one direction, my passion for animals, fueled by curiosity, led me to volunteer at a local Nature Center, enriching my life and my work in ways I had not anticipated.

Integrating this love with my professional life, showed me that expansion and exploration can coexist with existing commitments.

The Power of Curiosity

Curiosity is a gentle, inviting force that encourages us to explore, to step beyond the familiar and into the realm of what could be. It’s about noticing the glimmers of possibility that exist in our peripheral vision—those interests and dreams we’ve shelved because we believed it was too late or we were too old.

Elizabeth Gilbert, in her inspirational book “Big Magic,” champions the power of curiosity over the daunting quest for passion. Allow yourself to explore, to be open to what delights and intrigues you, without the pressure of knowing where it might lead.

The Journey of Rediscovery

Embracing curiosity and the “AND Both” mindset is an invitation to a journey of rediscovery. It’s a call to explore what lights us up, to engage with the world in new and meaningful ways, and to weave a richer, more vibrant tapestry of life.

For those of us feeling stuck or believing it’s too late to embark on a new path, remember: there is no deadline on discovery. Whether you’re drawn to the arts, eager to learn a new skill, move your career in a new direction, or passionate about a cause, there’s no time like the present to explore what intrigues you.

Taking the First Step

So, to anyone feeling stuck, uninspired, or believing it’s too late: this is your invitation.

The first step on this journey is simple yet profound: allow yourself to be curious.

What interests you? What have you always wanted to try but never did?

The act of exploration itself can be transformative, reigniting your passion not only for new pursuits but for life itself. It’s about raising your vibration, attracting new opportunities, and finding joy in the journey of exploration.

As we navigate our paths, let us remember that we are, indeed, gifted manifestors. By setting an intention and opening ourselves to the possibilities, we invite a world of opportunities to unfold before us.

Life is too rich, too full of wonder, to be confined to a single narrow path.

So, what’s next for you?

What small step can you take today towards something that delights and intrigues you?

Your adventure awaits, and it’s never too late to begin.

…AND you are NOT TOO OLD! 🥰

Great post! As my birthday approaches in a few days (they seem to come faster and faster), I’m having the time of my life learning new ideas and perspectives, meeting new people in various ways, and rediscovering those parts of my life that were meaningful but took a backseat for various reasons. The tradeoff of having to scroll for 10 minutes when entering my birth year online with following wherever my curiosity takes me is an easy one to make. Thanks, Elaine, for sharing this wisdom.
