Have you ever noticed that sometimes the last person to believe in you is… YOURSELF?
Everyone else can clearly see your potential – BUT you just can’t see it yourself! Instead self-doubt holds you back and you cling to old limiting beliefs. You’re waiting for confidence and certainty to show up before you can take a step forward.
It doesn’t work that way…
Confidence and certainty never show up and instead you wait and stay stuck in the same place.
We all have times in our lives when we don’t believe in ourselves.
I’ve been through this many times in my own life, especially when making a big transition. My own self-doubt has left me indecisively clinging to the ledge with white knuckles. I may let go with one hand, but self-doubt holds me back. Sometimes it feels like I just can’t let go…and make the leap, even though I want to be successful.
In my experience as a coach, most people fail not because of a lack of capability to reach their goal, but because they simply don’t believe that they can achieve it. They don’t see their own value and worth. They can’t visualize their own success.
This lack of belief leads to hesitant attempts, you dip a toe in, but you don’t commit fully. You start looking for evidence to support your limiting beliefs. If you believe that something is impossible, then you’ll look for evidence to support this, and not give it your all to make it happen – So it won’t happen because it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The mind is so powerful.
Here’s the deal…
The only person who is really stopping you is…YOU!
Believing in yourself is a choice.
You have to be open to believing that you can do it. You actually get to choose what you believe. What you believe is up to YOU! You learn and get good at new things by reading, practicing and experiencing whatever you’re wanting to achieve.
Full decision on your part to be there.
You have to decide and take FULL responsibility for stepping in and getting started. It requires nothing less than 100% commitment and no excuses! If you act as if it were possible, then you will create momentum and get things done that move you towards your goal. You’ll start getting results. Do things imperfectly – it’s quite liberating! Be open to making a few mistakes as you go – it’s part of the process of growing.
Stop blaming the past.
You can’t change the past, but you CAN influence the future starting today. Some limiting beliefs deeply embedded. Don’t use this as an excuse to stay stuck. The Enneagram is a great system to help you break free from your limitations, help you get out of your own way and empower you to make better choices.
It requires ALL your energy to be present.
Energy goes where attention flows…Notice your energy – pay attention to where it is going. Focus your energy towards your goal. Don’t waste it by getting distracted by any Lizard Brain activities. You get to choose how you use your energy. Focus on positive self-talk, affirmations and towards what you want to achieve.
Watch Your Language.
My English teacher taught me that there was ‘no such word as CAN’T!’ She would cross it out if we wrote it in our essays. Believing in yourself begins with the power of the language that you use both internally and externally. Listen to your language and ban any leaky language such as ‘I can’t…’ ‘I wish I could…’ ‘I’ll never be able to…’ These words are disempowering and suck your energy. They reinforce your negative limiting beliefs. Replace them with positive language that inspires confidence such as ‘I can…’ ‘I will…’ ‘I wonder if it’s possible to…’
